Asserting that this would be “rewarding” for Hamas’s attack on Israel, an Israeli minister criticized Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s plans to recognize a Palestinian state on Sunday in Madrid.
Amichai Chikli, the minister of diaspora affairs for Israel, was addressing a gathering of international far-right figures in Madrid that was hosted by the Vox party of Spain.
“Unfortunately, the current prime minister of Spain, Sanchez, believes that the Palestinians should be rewarded for the massacre — that this is the time to give them a state,” he said at the conference.
Spain has been among the most outspoken critics in Europe of Israel’s Gaza offensive, which commenced on October 7 following the deadly attack on southern Israel by Hamas gunmen.
According to Sanchez, who views a two-state solution as necessary for enduring peace, Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and Malta have decided to recognize a Palestinian state in addition to Israel. This move was made in March.
Along with a number of allies in the European Union, the socialist premier is expected to declare on Wednesday the day on which Madrid will recognize the state of Palestine.
