What will Pakistan team’s selection committee look like in future?

KARACHI: According to sources who spoke with Geo News on Wednesday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has established a new formula for the selection committee’s future as part of the ongoing changes inside the organization and the team’s management.

According to the reports, the selection panel would now include former cricket players Mohammad Yousuf and Asad Shafiq, as well as white-ball and red-ball coaches and the applicable captain of the relevant format.

The selection committee’s new criteria was made in response to the negative fallout following the Green Shirts’ poor performance and early elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024, which forced the board lead by Mohsin Naqvi to make significant adjustments.

A day prior, the board had announced that Yousuf, Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal would remain on the seven-member selection committee, but former pacer Wahab Riaz and former all-rounder Abdul Razzaq would be fired.

Razzaq served on the selection committees for both the men’s and women’s teams, while Wahab was a member of the men’s team.

In addition, because of the men’s team’s lack of discipline throughout the previous three tours, the board also removed Riaz and team manager Rana Mansoor from their positions as senior team managers.

According to the sources, Wahab and Razzaq gave unfair favors to some players, and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi only decided to fire the two after the inquiry into the subject was over.

According to the sources, the players who received backing from the duo ended up performing poorly and facing opposition from other members of the selection committee.

But in response to his dismissal, the former pacer questioned how six votes could be dominated by one person when there were seven members on the selection committee. He emphasized that all of this was recorded in the meeting minutes.

“I just want my people to know that I have served the game I love with faith and sincerity and have given 100% for the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” he said in a statement regarding X.

“We made selection decisions as a team and divided the process’s duty equally; each person’s vote had equal weight. It was an honor to play a part in that,” he continued.
