Railways announces increase in fare for all trains

Pakistan Railways sent a notification on Thursday stating that all mail, express, intercity, and passenger trains, including those with outsourced services, will see a 1% fare rise. As of tomorrow, all trains will have the new rate.

The motivation for this adjustment was the implementation of fare rationalization.

In addition, there would be a 2% rise in the fare for all freight and goods trains.

This had been communicated to all stations, booking offices, reservation offices, and pertinent personnel.

In the meantime, Pakistan Railways, with the assistance of railway police and train workers, has amassed over Rs76 million from ticketless passengers in a crackdown over the last six months.

According to ministry sources who spoke to APP, “about 59,143 passengers were found to be traveling without tickets in various trains and the said amount was collected from them, which is deposited in the official bank account of the department.”

They added that such crackdowns had happened on a daily basis and that this was not the first time that significant action had been taken against individuals traveling without tickets.

According to the sources, traveling without a ticket is prohibited, and anyone found in violation of the law will also be penalized and had to pay for a ticket for the duration of the train ride.

“Around 688 cases were registered in Peshawar Division, 584 in Rawalpindi, 1,103 in Lahore, 369 in Mughalpura workshops, 378 in Multan, 238 in Sukkur, 365 in Karachi, and 78 in Quetta Division,” they stated.

They said the Railways Police Help Desks had been established at all the major railway stations across the country, and the performance of the Railways Police has been quite satisfactory during the last year.

Regarding the performance of the railway police, they said: “Police are performing duties efficiently despite the limited resources, and the performance of the railway police will be further improved to the optimum level during the next year.”
