During her daring acceptance speech for the MTV Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 VMAs, Katy Perry addressed her critics and urged other performers to ignore negativity. In her award speech, Perry said, “There are no decade-long accidents,” and urged artists to protect their mental health by avoiding social media. “Do whatever it takes to stay true to yourself and true to your art,” she went on. Shut off social media and protect your mental well-being. Hold on. Feel the grass.
The address was delivered after Perry performed a medley of songs from her next album 143, which is scheduled for release on September 20, along with hits including “E.T.”, “California Gurls,” and “I Kissed a Girl.” She was joined on stage by special guest Doechii for the song “I’m His, He’s Mine.”
In addition, Perry thanked her family, fans, and her crew. Her spouse Orlando Bloom and their daughter Daisy were among them. She made fun of Bloom for “doing the dishes,” alluding to a recent interview in which she made light of the practice of praising men for doing housework.
Introduced by Bloom, Perry’s speech focused on her long career in the music business and addressed the difficulties faced by musicians in general and women in particular. She praised the self-assurance and genuineness of today’s young artists in her closing remarks.
