Aurora Borealis: Northern lights created by geomagnetic storm to be visible again

Astrogeeks, get ready for more powerful geomagnetic storms in the upcoming months.

Scientists predict a greater solar storm, according to a recent Nature article, which would increase the possibility of seeing more aurora borealis in various parts of the planet, as Forbes reported.

Throughout Friday and the weekend, the greatest geomagnetic storm of the yearโ€”classified as G5โ€”was detected, resulting in the visibility of the northern lights as far south as Arizona and Florida in North America.

The severe solar flares that occurred over the weekend were brought on by multiple Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) that collided as they entered Earth’s atmosphere.

In the next days, weeks, and months, as the sun approaches “solar maximum,” that might occur once more.

According to scientists, the optimal conditions for seeing auroras include darkness, a clear sky, and little to no pollution.

A disturbance on the sun that results in massive energy outbursts in the form of solar flares and CMEs radiating towards Earth is called a geomagnetic storm, sometimes referred to as a solar storm.
