Iran’sย Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Wednesday led the funeral prayer of the President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other senior officials who died in a helicopter crash.
According to Iranian media, Hamas’ Qatar-based leader Ismail Haniyeh was also present during the funeral prayer of President Raisi and conveyed condolences to the country’s leadership on behalf of Palestinian resistance groups.
According to Iranian media, Haniyeh was one of more than 40 high-ranking foreign delegations who took part in the funeral prayer. The delegations included more than 30 ministers and senior officials, as well as 10 presidents of state.
According to the leader of Hamas, the Iranian president felt that the “Al-Aqsa Storm” had struck at the core of Israel and was committed to standing behind the Palestinians until their objectives were met.
The funeral prayer was held three days after the president’s helicopter crashed on Sunday while returning from a dam inauguration ceremony close to Iran’s border with Azerbaijan. The helicopter was traveling across a mountainous area in dense fog.
According to Iranian media, President Raisi’s body would be transported to Mashhad for burial.
“On Tuesday, following a funeral in the northwest city of Tabriz, the bodies of President Raisi and his companions were transferred to Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport,” the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.
The Iranian president was accompanied by Ali Ale-Hashem, a representative of the Supreme Leader, Malek Rahmati, the governor of East Azerbaijan, two bodyguards, two pilots, and a crew member.
After a nighttime search in blizzard conditions, the charred wreckage of the Bell 212 helicopter was discovered early on Monday, declaring all passengersโincluding Raisiโdead.
A commission led by Brigadier Ali Abdollahi was formed by Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri to conduct an inquiry into the helicopter crash, which was initiated one day prior. There were rumors that the incident’s investigative results might be released to the public.
Following the incident, Iran is currently in a state of mourning.
The president’s pilot was in control of the convoy of the three helicopters, according to Ghulam Hussain Ismaili, an officer traveling with the president in one of the two aircraft that survived.
When the helicopters took off following the dam’s opening, the weather was fine, but the presidential pilot requested to fly high to avoid clouds forty-five minutes into the journey, he added.
He continued by saying that the president’s helicopter was positioned between the other two helicopters, and that the president’s helicopter had vanished thirty seconds later, according to the pilot of Ismaili’s helicopter.
“We searched for the president’s chopper by circling with ours. Because of the clouds, our chopper continued to soar. He mentioned that “our pilot continued flying, landing the helicopter at a nearby copper mine.”
He disclosed that they attempted to contact the foreign minister, the president’s security, and Captain Mustafavi, the pilot of the chopper, but got no response. But Imam Ale-Hashem got a call informing him that there was an accident involving the presidential helicopter.
“I called Ale-Hashem and he also told me that the helicopter had crashed in the valley,” he stated.
Ismaili went on to say that Ale-Hashem passed away some hours after the incident, but it was evident from examining the remains of the chopper’s occupants that the president and other officials had perished instantly.
