Solar power tariff: Minister says IMF didn’t set condition for gross metering

Federal Minister Awais Khan Leghari clarified the debate over net metering for solar-powered customers on Tuesday, amidst fear in the solar panel industry.

“Unfortunately, an unjustified fear is being generated in the market,” Leghari stated in an interview with the “Geo Pakistan” show on Geo News.

He denied the media allegations, claiming that there was no requirement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to switch from net to gross metering.

“Therefore, in order to reduce costs, the government wishes to privatize certain distribution companies,” he stated.

In order to reduce their electricity costs, he also advised individuals to purchase low-power fans.

The financial advantages of generating electricity internally would be much diminished if the federal government were to replace solar net metering for rooftop solar panels with gross metering, according to allegations that surfaced last week.

The financial advantages of generating electricity internally would be much diminished if the federal government were to replace solar net metering for rooftop solar panels with gross metering, according to allegations that surfaced last week.

According to the sources, suggestions have been made to discontinue the gross metering unit-for-unit formula. In contrast, the new policy would halve the cost of power units supplied to the national grid.

Additionally, it was discovered that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) will establish the price at which the government will buy electrical units from the owners of rooftop solar panels.

In contrast, consumers will purchase electricity from power distribution corporations (Discos) at the official government rate.
