On Sunday, rescuers in Iran raced to locate the crash site of a helicopter carrying President Ebrahim Raisi in order to ascertain the fate of every person on board.
The Iranian constitution outlines the following procedures in the event that a president becomes incompetent or passes away while in office:
The Islamic Republic’s constitution states in article 131 that in the event of a president’s death while in office, the first vice president assumes the role with the approval of the supreme leader, who has the last say in all matters pertaining to state policy.
A new president must be elected within a maximum of 50 days, according to a council made up of the speaker of parliament, the first vice president, and the head of the judiciary.
According to the present schedule, presidential elections are scheduled for 2025. Raisi was elected president in 2021.
