T20I World Cup 2024: PCB looking to rope in Vivian Richards as ‘mentor’

LAHORE: Sir Vivian Richards, a seasoned West Indian cricketer, is being courted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to be the Green Shirts’ coach for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The sources claim that because of Richards’ expertise, knowledge, and potential influence, the board is in discussions with him to appoint him as team mentor. The event is scheduled to take place in the United States and the West Indies on June 2.

Richards’ position as team mentor of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Quetta Gladiators club served as the impetus for the PCB’s decision to bring him in.

The senior cricket player’s current media obligations for the next international competition, nevertheless, provide a challenge for PCB in this area.

However, the board is still determined to hire the legend of the West Indies even as it is looking into ways to resolve the scheduling conflict.

The announcement coincides with the fact that Gary Kirsten, Pakistan’s new head coach for white-ball cricket, has already arrived in the UK to train with the team ahead of tomorrow’s four-match Twenty20 International Series against England. Kirsten will be indispensable to the Men in Green as they get ready for the big event.

The most awaited encounter between Pakistan and India is scheduled for June 9 (Sunday) in New York. The national team will play their first World Cup match on June 6 in Dallas against the USA.

Twenty qualifying teams in all, split into four groups of five, will compete for the coveted title in the T20I World Cup 2024.

The Super Eight round will be contested by the top two teams from each group.

At that point, the qualifying teams will be split into two groups of four once more. The top two teams go to the semi-final, where the winners will play in the championship game.

The World Cup final will take place in Barbados on June 29. The event’s semi-finals will be held in Guyana and Trinidad on June 26 and 27, respectively.

The West Indies venues are the Kensington Oval in Barbados, the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, the Providence Stadium in Guyana, the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground in St. Lucia, and the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent.

Meanwhile, the games will be held at three locations in the United States: Grand Prairie, Texas; Florida’s Lauderhill; and New York’s Eisenhower Park.
