Can walking, yoga treat depression?

A recent review of over 200 trials found that exercise is a useful therapy for treating depression.

Considering that these exercises are more strenuous, the research, which was published in The BMJ, found that walking, running, yoga, and strength training are helpful in lowering symptoms of depression.

According to Michael Noetel, PhD, the primary study author and senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Queensland in Australia, “we found that exercise leads to reduced depression at levels comparable with gold-standard treatments like cognitive-behavior therapy,” he told Health.

“We can be confident thereโ€™s a causal effect here.”

Researchers looked at the connection between depression and exercise by analyzing data from 218 studies with over 14,000 participants.

The exercise regimens that were examined included tai chi, qigong, strength training, yoga, walking, and jogging.

According to Ulrick Vieux, DO, a sports psychiatrist at Hackensack University Medical Center, exercise releases serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood.Treat Depression with Walking and Yoga News

“Low levels of serotonin, for instance, have been linked to…depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobias,” he stated. “[But] exercise raises serotonin levels.”
